Tetrad is the dubstep and bass music project of L.A.-based musician, producer, songwriter, and DJ Cheyne Bush. A lifelong musician, Cheyne learned jazz on sax and guitar in school, and punk & experimental music at home.Beginning with learning alto, tenor, and baritone saxophone and guitar, he developed an understanding of jazz music in school, and experimented with punk, hardcore, and ska music at home. He started his first band Issue 89, playing a fusion of street punk and ska, with two friends in Culver City, together going on to play with punk acts like Agent Orange and The Diffs (members of whom later formed FIDLAR) and later joining a metalcore band called MidMourn on vocals and synthesizers.
His diverse music experience all came together when he started experimenting with music software and DAWs such as Ableton Live and discovered artists such as Aphex Twin, Boards of Canada, and Autechre, turning him on to electronic music. As he was developing his style and listening to deep minimal techno and IDM, a new influence came out of his interest in 4×4 and 2-step Garage music -– this new influence was dubstep, in the form of Burial and Shackleton. Discovering the Hyperdub and Skull Disco artists instilled a shift towards his new musical direction.
Following multiple collaborations with artists such as Brukha as Friendly Strangers in 2007 and LMNOP as Cybertooth in 2009, Cheyne started recording solo as Tetrad in 2015 and has since released a clutch of deep and weighty dubstep tunes on labels like American dubstep imprint Sure State and Heavyweight in the UK. Most recently, he’s released his vinyl debut with the 7” single “Awaken Dub” on Portland’s vaunted ZamZam Sounds label, and a follow-up 7″ with newly debuting Bay Area label Material Sound with his tune “Eazy Street.” His next vinyl release was announced, this time a 12″ record, which includes a collaboration with his brother, Dillon Bush, under his moniker Ahkur, to be coming from Bristol’s dark dubstep haven Foundation Audio.
